| Ingrown Toenail |
|
Ingrown toenails are one of the
most common foot problems treated at The Walking Clinic. Dr. Sol
has corrected ingrown nails on patients from infants to seniors.

The Problem
|
All the antibiotics, hydrogen peroxide,
Outgrow®, epsom salt soaks or Neosporin® in the world
will not fix this problem permanently. The
problem with an ingrown nail is the nail itself. The nail
plate doesn't belong in the subcutaneus tissue and it causes a
foreign body reaction. The pain, redness, swelling and drainage
are from your body's defense system.
|
|
|
The procedure of choice is the P
& A (phenol-alcohol) procedure. This procedure is usually
performed in the office under local anesthesia. After numbing
the toe, the ingrown border of the nail is removed and the root
is cauterized to prevent the border from regrowing. This is a
permanent correction in >95% of the cases. For most patients,
this procedure can be performed on the same day as your initial
evaluation if requested.

The Result
|
After the procedure you can expect
your toe to remain numb for several hours. So few patients report
discomfort that pain medications are not routinely prescribed
although they are available upon request. You can expect to participate
in all of your activities immediately after the procedure as no
restrictions are routinely necessary. Ten
days of follow-up care are included in the global fee and most
patients are discharged after 10-14 days.
