Instructions For Patients With A New Fiberglass Cast
Your new cast is hard and inflexible. The most serious complication of casting is usually significant swelling occurring within your cast. Since the cast cannot expand, the increased swelling will eventually cut-off circulation to the limb. You must be alert to any sings or symptoms that may indicate the onset of swelling within your cast.
Watch For The Following Warning Signs
1
Swelling beyond the end of the cast (i.e. forefoot and toes)
2
Coldness beyond the end of the cast
3
Change of color (i.e. blue toes)
4
Excessive pain
5
Tingling / numbness
Elevation of the involved limb should be your initial response to any sign or symptom noted above. It is advisable to elevate the limb (with knees bent) to a level at least above the hip.
If you do not experience any relief after 30 minutes, please call Dr. Sol.
To contact Dr. Sol, call the office number (635-7700) and follow the automated instructions. You will be directed to press "1" for the emergency voice mail box.
